Muscle memory and Coffee

My daily routine is to wake up, get ready and get to the regular shop to buy an Americano and a muffin. The machine from which I get the coffee from, has the 12oz Americano button on the top left side, which I press everyday. Today, I went to some other store for a coffee as it was on the way. It had a different kind of machines I kept the cup under the dispenser nozzles and pressed the top left button. The machine did not respond, therefore I pressed again and it worked. The moment it started to make the buzzing noise of grinding coffee beans, I noticed that it had a different kind of machine with a different button configuration. It had the leftmost button programmed to have 12oz Cappuccino. Although when the first time it did not work, I read the text on the button and it was Americano.

While the cup was filling up I understood that everything, muscle memory, and eye memory (there is no such term) has taken full control on me at morning. This was the saddest coffee I had in quite a while. I was really looking forward to have a nice and calm Americano, and now I am walking out with a cup of Capucchino, which was not expected. The milk tastes different (horrible). I was only able to finish half of the cup, and then later in the day ended up making some coffee at home.

There are plenty of muscle memory related stories I and my friends have. One of them are after I finish writing something on a paper with a pen and after I keep the pen down, sometimes my hand does an action on air, as if there was a keyboard, and I was saving the document with a specific key combination (:wq + Enter to be specific).

Did you do anything funny because of muscle memory?

Got a free coffee from the cafe. This is the first time I have been able to get something free using a loyalty card. The card had 10 boxes, each time one buys a coffee, one box gets stamped, the 10th one is free. It was pure joy when I didn’t have to pass the money along with the card, but, I was walking out with a cup of coffee. (The picture of the below card is the new one).

Previously I got a a similar card from Nando’s. The loyalty card looks like something like the below image. Note that the number 3 box is not stamped, but number 4 box is stamped. This is because I was greedy, and planned to get the 1/4 chicken as well as the 1/2 and the whole chicken in consecutive visits, by getting the 1, 2, 4, 5, 7, 8, 9 box stamped first, next redeeming the 3, 6, and 10 boxes.

Some Coffee-less Coffee in Cafe Coffee Day

I posted an experience in Cafe Coffee previously in my other blog two years ago (which I have recently reblogged here). For some strong coffee there is not much option except either go to Cafe Coffee Day or to Barista, else you need to know if some place serves good coffee, which is extremely difficult to find here. Not only the coffee but also I need to keep an eye on the out-flow of the money. Therefore after moving into a new city for my graduate degree I was searching for a place which serves good coffee. and found none. After some googling I found out that there was a Cafe Coffee Day within 5 to 6 kilometers from the campus. Fall back point. Read the rest of this entry »

Here is an old post from the “other blog”. The Cafe Coffee Day (CCD) are growing like mushrooms all over the city, and the degradation in quality and service is noticeable. This post was from 2010, but in recent days too I have faced inconsistencies in the service in different parts of my city, and also in some other parts of India. This is one the experiences I wrote during the festive season of Durga Puja in 2010.

We entered a Cafe Coffee Day shop a bit away from the main road clutter near Bejoygarh, to get better ambience than the loud SouthCity Shopping mall outlet. We selected a corner and had a seat, and waited for the menu card. It seemed like we are invisible because the menu card was distributed to the other tables occupied after our arrival. We were joking on the significance of a drink named “xxx” displayed on the case, suddenly the menu card came, with an apology from the waiter.
